Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday, and I pretty much wrote it off this year because we wouldn't be with our family to celebrate. I am very happy to say that I couldn't have been more wronger.  This was one of my favorite Thanksgivings ever.  Also, I fell in love with New York a million times over.  I always say CJ dragged me here, but he is also going to have to drag me out of here.  Kicking and screaming.

On Wednesday night we went to see Romeo and Juliet starring O R L A N D O B L O O M. The Channing Tatum of my generation! (Okay, maybe Channing Tatum is the Channing Tatum of my generation but YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.) It was so good! I have always really liked Shakespeare but I still have a hard time following it word for word on stage. The set and music were incredible and I mean...Orlando Bloom. Bye.

Then we were on the train home and started talking about whether or not we wanted to go to the parade...aaaaand neither of us really wanted to. Ha! Too cold and too many people! So we split-second decided to hop off at 81st street and see the balloons live and in person all ready for the parade! It was so cool and they are so much bigger than I thought. Did you know Macy's is the country's second largest consumer of helium?? The first largest is the government...figures.

Hannukah in our apartment lobby...LOLZ. So many variations of tile. Just imagine...this is one small corner of the lobby and you can see four different types!!!

This is the pumpkin cream pie that I actually SLAVED over just for the sake of making something for Thanksgiving. I wish I could properly express the labor that went into this pie, mainly four different grocery stores and a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond. And then I had to actually MAKE IT. But it was so so so so good. Thanks again, Pioneer Woman. You are everything.

This is my hubsband at our Thanksgiving dinner. We went to a restaurant called Jacob's Pickles on the UWS and it was so delicious.  They typically serve delicious southern fare like fried chicken and biscuits, cheese grits, etc. so I mean...we knew it was going to be good.

The first course was pickles (they are fms for their pickles, hence the name) and a deviled egg which I loved because I'm hood like that and CJ did not love so I ate his.  The second course was this lovely potato soup with leeks and bacon and probably lots of butter and cream.  And it was served in a mason jar and it was delicious.  When I saw how small the soup was I was like "WHY SO SMALL" but I later realized that they were just looking out for me because...five courses.

Good salad with rocquefort and beets. I love beets.

\

THE MOTHERSHIP. Course four...a turkey leg (makes me feel so barbaric), stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy. Perfection. And yeah I had a diet coke...

Cannot even attempt to explain the eyebrow/squint situation happening here but I promise I did not get botox.

I know what you're thinking...chicken nuggets with honey mustard sauce?  NOPE.

Deep fried oreos with pumpkin spice creme for dipping. Currently salivating...heaven help me.  I will probably crave these every day for the rest of my life.

After dinner we went to Hunger Games at a move theater with recliners and let me tell you.  I don't typically love going to the movies but recliners are a game-changer. 100%.  I suggested we go to the movies probably 5 times this weekend because I liked those recliners a lot.

This is my train to work Friday morning.  My morning commute is usually body-to-body sardines packed onto the train! It was like I was the only person in the whole city going into work on Friday. Oh wait, I was.

On Friday night we ended up doing A LOT of shopping and it was really fun which is weird because I usually hate shopping.  We bought these little elephants from the Bryant Park holiday village.  They were hand-carved in Kenya and I loveeee them. Elephants are my favorite animal besides bears.  We also bought some handmade pillow covers from India and a bunch of stuff from the home section of Anthro.

CJ trying to take a picture of me at Persian dinner...and I did not like it.

But I eventually kind of complied. Kashk Bademjan is like, my favorite food at this point.

The pumpkin cream pie two days later...I was afraid we wouldn't be able to finish it by ourselves.  Understimation.  CJ got me this pie dish with matching rolling pin from Anthro for my birthday.

Saturday we began our apartment hunt.  Our sublet contract is *finally* up after December so we'll be in a new place by Jan 1st!! ...or homeless. Whichever.  PLZ SEND UR GOOD VIBEZ.  This building was actually not that pretty but I'm still not over all the art deco that's rampant in this city.  I LOVE IT.

Or do you not think so far ahead? Cause I been thinking 'bout forever...

I have to have things to look forward to or I will go absolutely insane. Also, the title of this post is from Frank Ocean. Listen to his new album (explicit), or at least his single (not explicit).

tonight: Batman with my friends! I don't really care that much about seeing the movie, but I can pretty much never pass up a midnight showing. My roommates and I have been to every Twilight and Harry Potter premiere since we got to college. It's a tradition!

friday: Driving Sam to the airport. I should honestly open a business for driving people to/picking people up from the airport...I have already been 4 times in the past month! The weird thing is I actually love doing it. You get to drive one way by yourself and enjoy solitude on the freeway, and the other way you get to talk to someone you like about their trip or anything else you want. It's a lot of fun. If you ever need a ride to the airport...hit me up.

sunday: BACHELORETTE FINALE. Hate on it all you want, but this season of the Bachelorette has honestly been one of main things that has gotten me through my first month of post-Spain life! I lovoovovovoovovoeeeeee Jef and I think **SPOILER ALERT** that she chooses him because of things that I have heard from reliable sources..but the previews for the episode make it look super dramatic and like I don't know what's going to happen even though I probably do.

tuesday, 24: Pioneer Day! Pioneer Day is like another 4th of July here in Utah. I used to think it was totally ridiculous but I love having the day off and what's not to like about barbecues and fireworks? Also picking Sam up from the airport.

thursday, 26: CJ goes back to California. No more trips! Hooray! (Since we left Spain he's been to Portugal, Morocco, New York City, the Bahamas, New Orleans, and Florida. Yeah.)

saturday, 28: Hair appointment! I am excited because I finally found a girl I like here in Provo. She doesn't talk too much, does a great job, and she gives me a diet coke. But I just remembered that I'm quitting for good. This Saturday. Going to jump out the window now k see ya bye.

thursday, 8: Flying to California! I can't believe it's still three weeks away because I feel like I have been waiting FOREVER for this trip. CJ is from Corona (near Orange County and LA) so I am going to visit him and meet his family. The only place I have ever been in California is Disneyland so I am really excited! I am dying to go to Sprinkles Cupcakes because I feel like it's Mecca for cupcake lovers, but mostly I'm just delighted to be with CJ since I haven't seen him in so long. And I love visiting new places.

What are your favorite things to do/eat in Southern California?

Famiree

I am so so thankful for my family.

And I am eternally and especially grateful to my mom and dad...I love them a lot.

I was looking at pictures of all my little cousins on facebook this afternoon (I am the oldest grandchild on both sides) and I am so excited to go home at Thanksgiving and see them!

My family has the best Thanksgivings ever, and I didn't get to go home last year and so I am very very happy to be making the trip this year.

And going along with the theme of families I just can't help but say that I have been VERY anxious to have my own lately...it's called babycrazy and it is running rampant in my apartment.

I watched this film this weekend and it is very beautiful. Don't know if I recommend it...but if you watch this trailer it gives you a pretty good idea of the film. You don't get much more plot in the actual movie than you do in the trailer so just expect that if you decide to get it from redbox.

THE ROYAL WEDDING!!!!! (jk)

Blogging after you haven't blogged in weeks is so awkward. For me it is, anyway. I feel like I should have blogged five times by now, and there really isn't any way to cover everything that has happened during the past however long it's been. So, posterity, I am truly sorry. I will do my best to record the things of my heart.

I left my Russia. Sad day, happy day, all is well. As soon as I got to LAX I was smiling like a goon. Three or four airport workers went out of their way to help me with my bags, finding where to go next, et cetera. And two workers even made comments about my BYU shirt. In fact, this woman security guard who towered over me glared down at my shirt when I walked through the detector and asked, "You play basketball for Brigham Young?" and I said, "Uhhhhhaha...no...I go to school there though." She said, "Alright." What I didn't say was "Maybe you didn't notice that I am Hobbit-sized?"

Spent a week at home. Ohhhh how I love my home. My family is just the greatest. Everyone liked their souvenirs (huge relief), especially Carter who basically wore his hat everywhere. I got to watch my little sister's soccer game, two and a half of McKay's lacrosse games, and Quinn's lacrosse practice. Have you ever watched an 8 year old play lacrosse? Holy cute. I had a lot of fun while I was home. In fact, I was kind of thinking: WHY DON'T I JUST STAY HERE FOR SUMMER THAT'S SUCH A GOOD IDEA! and then I remembered last summer when I had literally NO social life outside of my family. Yeesh.

Drove back to Provo with my grandma who is going on a mission to Atlanta for the next 18 months. She went into the MTC last Monday to begin her work as a full-time missionary. What a woman! I have learned so much from her and I am so glad that she has the opportunity to serve a mission like she has always wanted to.

EASTER=I love my life, I love the gospel, I love Jesus Christ, I love the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I love the Hansens&Stroshines, I love the Sandersons, I love the Paces, I love Cadbury eggs.

Moved in to my new apartment, worst day ever, sometimes I really hate you, Liberty Square, I can do hard things. By myself.

I started to look for a job on Tuesday. I applied probably 10 places total, and through a series of weird/miraculous events, I was offered a job on Thursday. If you don't know my job search history, let me tell you, it's not pretty. I've been turned down by McDonald's twice. After interviews. Pretty embarrassing. But Heavenly Father is always looking out for me, and I know that anything good that happens to me is 100% because of Him. So thanks be to God for my new job at Zupas in Orem!

Started new classes on Wednesday. They are good. Missionary Preparation with Brother Bott (Now I know why everyone jumped on that bandwagon. He is awesome and I love him.), and Humanities 262 with Professor Sederholm. I am reeeeally excited for my classes. I love school.

Started running in Provo. What a mess. It's at least 100x harder to run here than it is in Moscow. Elevation and terrible air and whatnot. YUCK. But, I ran all but 1.5 of my miles last week. Yay, me. That's 18.5 miles.

Ate a waffle from Bruges Waffles and Frites in Salt Lake while I was there for a job interview. Oh me, oh my. Yummiest thing ever. So good. If you live anywhere in Utah Valley or SL Valley or even in Rexburg...you need to go. I want to go with my friends sometime and get some frites!

Finally saw the Justin Bieber movie...loved him before. Love him now. Seriously, what a cutie. Also, I would marry Scooter Braun if I had the opportunity. This was maybe my favorite part.

Saw True Grit. Good! And hilarious. I really liked it. And it made me so excited to read the book in my Western Lit class with Abby this fall! And ride horses at my professor's ranch!

Made new friends. SMILE FACE.

Watched the Cougar Lacrosse team beat the UofU 18 to 5...BLAM. I'd like to marry that team.

Went to my new ward and there are like 20-30 people. I love! It is so fun to be able to learn everyone's names and all be friends and blah blah blah. Oh, and I recognized this girl Mallory from when I was reeeeallly little and both of our fathers confirmed that they are, in fact, good friends and we have, in fact, met before. Such a small world! She lives across the hall from me!

My parents celebrated their 20th anniversary today. I am so thankful for them and how much they love each other! I hope that I can be like them someday because they really are amazing parents and amazing individuals.

Now I am listening to A Walk to Remember because Jodes is watching it in the front room. Cute movie, but I hate the fact that I know that she dies in the end...And I love this song. I like the original better, but...whatever.

Dear gentleman callers.

I am a seamstress.

Disclaimer: My Gran taught me the proper way to sew on a button. Really, she did. But I have since forgotten how, and I didn't have a toothpick handy, either. Maybe she can re-teach me when I go home in a few weeks.

I mean, it's not hard to sew a button on, and I didn't even do it correctly (feel free to cringe when you look at my stitches), but I am proud of myself.

This is like, my favorite part from Easy A. So funny. And also...my life.

BewareTheIdesOfMarch

First things first...Chris Brown is officially crazy. I boycotted him for a while after the Rihanna thing, by which I mean like a year, but then he came out with Yeah 3x and I couldn't resist and now he is friends with JB and they did a song together which I love but then he threw a chair and broke a window and ripped his shirt into shreds at Good Morning America AND I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE.

Today I watched a lotttt of slam poetry on the youtube. Mostly Sarah Kay and one by this black lady who swore a lot but was awesome. I think if all else fails I could probably do spoken word poetry for a living.

Time for a list. 3 things I am going to buy when I get back to America.

1. iPod shuffle. My dinosaur iPod is just not cutting it on the runs. I have to hold it in my hand the whole time and it just gets all sweaty and I feel tempted to change the song.

2. Tangled on DVD. I watched Tangled yesterday and today and I will probably watch it twice tomorrow. And I saw it 3 times in theaters. If you haven't seen it...yeesh. I don't even know. See it as soon as you possibly can because it is perfect! And when Mason watches it occasionally points to Rapunzel and says, "That's Caitlin." Makes my day every time. ALSO I am pretty sure the movie is highly symbolic. But what movie isn't, amIright?

3. HAIR APPOINTMENT. Is anyone going to tell me what to do to my hair? Because I really will walk into the salon and tell them to make me look like Rihanna. Just to warn you.

And to make this post worthwhile, here's some pictures of me in front of some supercool Russian things!

Cathedral of Christ the Savior. SO beautiful inside. Welcome to the ugliest time of the year in Moscow...black slush season.
The Palace of Catherine the Great. My friends Trisha and Janet!
Outside the convent.

Kind of a terrible picture, but this is Moscow State University...one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever laid eyes on! It is AMAZING.

I love you! I will be home in less than a month and I am exciiiiiiiited.

Plan to be surprised

I feel a little stressed. I thought I had all my plans for moving back to Provo laid out, but things have gone a little differently than I wanted them to...And it's going to be okay. I just decided. In this moment I have resolved to stop freaking out and just let the good times roll in Moscow.

BUT. My elbows are truly itching to bake. Baking is my emotional outlet. Usually when I get in the mood, I drop everything (like homework), run to the store to pick up whatever extras I need, and whisk myself away to the wonderful fantasy world that is my kitchen. Today I'm not so lucky. I'm far from the grocery store, and it's not like they have the ingredients I need anyway. The brown sugar in the cabinet is obscure and rock solid, and I don't have a hand mixer...so. There you go.

It also doesn't help that in my spare time I enjoy browsing food blogs. The inspiration I find is remarkable: woopie pies, chocolate chip cookies with an oreo inside, browned butter brownies, crumb cakes, copy-cat recipes for Samoas...mmmmmmmm. Hopefully when I return to the promised land all my baking dreams will be fulfilled. For now I will listen to the good karma playlist on www.stereomood.com and occupy myself with books and writing to curb my cravings.

Here's a few words about plans from a movie I truly cannot stand to watch, Dan in Real Life. It's a good quote.

"I want to talk to you about the subject of plans...life plans and how we all make them, and how we hope our kids make good, smart, safe plans of their own. But if we're really honest with ourselves, most of our plans don't work out as we had hoped. So instead of asking our young people, 'What are your plans? What do you plan to do with your life?', maybe we should tell them this: Plan...to be surprised."

Stardust. Have you seen it? It's delightful.

"You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves... You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing."

MERRY&BRIGHT

Since I've been away from home, I have thoroughly enjoyed decorating for Christmas. (Mind you I've only spent two Christmases away from home.) Anyway, I don't really remember being overly excited to decorate for Christmas at my house. Maybe a little, actually. But nothing compares to my holiday spirit this year.

Halloween was approaching and I had already started listening to Christmas music. On Halloween my roommates and I agreed (some were reluctant) that the Christmas decorations could go up at midnight on Halloween night so like...November 1. Nobody was home, Abby and I were bored, and it was like 9 or 10 o'clock and we were dying to put the decorations up. So we set all the clocks forward to midnight, blasted Christmas music, and decked the halls. My roommates were very confused when they realized all the clocks were ahead.

Some people say "Blah humbug. No Christmas decorations, music, lights, or anything of that sort until AFTER THANKSGIVING! RAAAWWWWR!" And you know, to each his own. But riddle me this. What is Thanksgiving about? Being thankful and America and football and food. What is Christmas about? Being thankful and Jesus and food. Jesus made America, and America made football, so I really don't see the problem with mushing the two together as far as decorations go.

The other night, I think it was November 29, as I was leaving the library I said Merry Christmas to the security guard. And he laughed at me and said "WHAT! It's not even December 1st!" WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END? WHEN CAN I FINALLY CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS? Because apparently, the start date isn't the day after Thanksgiving anymore. Oh, no. It has to be December 1. That is nonsense.

I will honestly not be surprised if I encounter someone today who isn't "ready" for Christmas yet. Buncha crackheads.

And I watched While You Were Sleeping for the first time last night and it was SOOO good! Christmas, Chicago, hilarity, love...what could be better?

XOXO squared

I retract my statement about Ellen Page because Inception is awesome and she did awesome.

Less than a month until I am back at school.

Thanksgiving

Well, I am back in Provo after a week in paradise for Thanksgiving break. That "paradise" remark is not sarcasm, I assure you. I got into town at like 1 AM Saturday, and I left at like 7 AM Friday...it was a good visit. Mostly I just loved being in Richland with my family.

On Thanksgiving we saw the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was very very weird, and even though I fell asleep for like 10 minutes I still enjoyed it. Like 15 minutes into the movie my dad said SO LOUD, "This is WEIRD." and the people behind us were cracking up at his little remarks. Thanksgiving is possibly my favorite holiday. My favorite time of the year is October-January 1st. LOVE IT.

Yesterday...I did little to nothing productive. I read some of Boyd K. Packer's The Holy Temple for my family history class, but that was really pretty much it. The thing is though, not only was I not doing anything productive, I wasn't doing anything fun either. So I'll have to work on that...I did, however, go to In-n-Out to get a milkshake (of course I ended up getting a burger as well). That's fun..? Oh well, I guess I will just have to suffer today to get the things done that I need to...after I go to Target after class! Hopefully I don't spend tooooo much money :)

This weekend I stayed at Heather's house and on Sunday night we went to Temple Square to see the Christmas lights! So pretty.

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

I decided that I write too much. What am I going to do about it? Nothing.

I was going to take a nap in the library during this free hour I had...but I got distracted. I'll take one when I get home today. It will be glorious.

I would just love a cupcake from Sweet Mandy B's right now. As if I don't eat enough sweets...I think sweets actually compose most of my diet at the moment, unfortunately.

I've had my headphones in this whole time, and I'm not listening to anything. It's annoying...

-----

One of my friends texted me tonight and told me she's moving out tomorrow.

Dropping out of school.

Going back home.

No big deal.

"Everything is fantastic."

I talked to Megan about it and she told me that a bunch of opportunities opened up for this girl away from BYU and so she is going for it. I say good for her. I'm really glad that everything is working out, and that this will be better for her.

And now I'm thinking...I wish I had that kind of courage. To just up and leave in the middle of the semester. To just pack up my stuff and try something else. The courage to even think about why I'm really here, actually consider what I'm doing with my life, and maybe question it? Cause right now I kindof feel like I'm just wingin' it.

Watching three movies a day. Skating by. Indexing like a crazy person. Going to church. Going to class. Eating way too much. Spending MY OWN hard earned money. And worrying. And complaining. Hmm...something's gotta give, right? Right...

Today I watched the movie Swing Vote. It was really pretty good. Light-hearted.

Tonight I watched Slumdog Millionare with some of my friends. It was good, thought-provoking, eye-opening, heart-wrenching, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I took that nap that I wanted to. It was about 20 minutes long, and not as glorious as I thought it would be. I still have a headache. I don't know what's wrong with me.

Thinkin' about DG.

October 27, 2009

With the first cup, you're a stranger. With the second cup, you're a friend. With the third cup, you are family.

Well, I've been trying to make this thing look cute for a while but I've mostly failed. Today in my family history class, my teacher talked about blogs as a means for family history and personal records. I think it's really funny to hear older people talk about technology because they're way fascinated by it. I think I don't appreciate it.

This morning, it snowed. And it was beautiful. For a while it was really overcast and cloudy so you couldn't even see the top half of the mountains, but it cleared up later. Timp is covered with snow and it looks so cool! Especially since down here the trees still have their fall colors.

I can't believe that I have to start signing up for my new classes for winter semester NEXT WEEK! Time goes by relatively fast for me now. I don't really know what I want to take or should take. I haven't really decided on a major, which does not help at all. I'm leaning towards elementary education right now because that is definitely something I would love doing. But there are so many other things to think about! I think Anthropology would be SO cool, and I would be able to travel and do field studies which is something I've always really wanted to do. WE SHALL SEE!

I still don't know what to be for Halloween...at this point, I don't really care that much. Maybe I will throw my Hannah Montana costume together at the last minute.

I just rediscovered a movie I loved when I was little and they have the whole thing on youtube! I watched Thumbelina last night, so when I got on youtube today under my recommended videos were a bunch of kids movies. I noticed a clip I kindof recognized and then realized it was QUEST FOR CAMELOT which is sooo good and I had totally forgotten what it was called. So weird that I still remember the words to the songs...

Lean Pockets are nasty. And the fact that I have to put Ranch dressing on them to make them taste better makes them not lean anymore...So. Next time I will buy Hot Pockets if I'm in the mood for Pockets again.

Today, Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea spoke at the Marriott Center. Of course I watched it from the comfort of my four-foot couch, but some things he said were really interesting to me. He shared an African Proverb that says "If you educate a boy, you educate an individual. If you educate a girl, you educate a community." When he was being introduced, the Vice President alluded to when Brigham Young said that if he had to choose to educate his sons or his daughters he would educate his daughters. He said he couldn't find the exact quote and he didn't really know if he actually said it, but I know he said that. Anyway, Moretenson closed by talking about how people who serve other people for years eventually burn out becuase they are not mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally stable enough. He told us as college students to figure all that stuff out NOW. "You solve your problems here, then go out into the world to make it a better place." I couldn't agree more! His speech was really great. Abby thinks he is a secret Mormon.

The rug is bunchy. It is bugging me. It also needs to be vacuumed. The garbage can in the bathroom needs to be taken out. I always assume someone else will do it. Hmm...
